Mark Leyden conducted this interview with Madi Johnson on 12/11/2017.
Madi Johnson is a DJ in the Minnesota music scene. His passion for music has been aroused since he was a child. He has memories of “Billie Jean” playing by Michael Jackson all the way back to when he was just 5 years old. He has made a name for himself in the Twin Cities. Performing at night clubs, weddings, bars, and hosing his own show during the day.
ML: If you could describe Minnesota’s Music scene in a brief sentence, what would you say?
MJ: The music scene is jumping, and diverse. New sounds are being created every day, and everyone is fighting for publicity.
ML: What our the common 3 styles of music in your city?
MJ: Hip Hop has been ruling the city for the last 25 years, as we moved away from the rock scene. EDM is on the rise, it is where all the new energy is being poured into. Jazz is still a popular sit down scene in the city, and is commonly listened too.
ML: Who listens to your radio station?
MJ: On World Cast Radio my audience is made up of mostly people who listen to old school rap, and also teenagers who enjoy free flow rap.
ML: With that being said, do you mainly play old school rap?
MJ: The music varies anywhere from old school rap, to a mix of different songs. Sometimes we will have artists come and give live freestyles. Lots of Dr. Dre, Ying Yang Twins, and Eminem like era. But also a mix of EDM, and pop at nights.
ML: Who are some popular artists in your city?
MJ: Sims is a popular and well known artist around the city. He has performed on my morning show and killed it. Muja Messiah is common local artist as well.
ML: Who’s your favorite local artist, and our there any on the come up?
MJ: I really enjoy Mitclan from Doom Tree. He is fast pasted, passionate, and all round nasty on the beat. He’s very illustrative with his words. With that being said, MaLLY is a younger artist, who is making his name.
ML: Is there a top play list on WorldCast Radio?
MJ: There is no estimated song list on my station, I do this on purpose. So my audience can constantly hear new music.
ML: Do you guys have any events to promote the local artists?
MJ: We have new artists come in and record music in are studio booths, and have people record freestyles and if we feel there good enough will play them on morning shows.
ML: How do you promote your local music group?
MJ: I shout them out all day, making sure everyone in my area code knows where and when these artist will be performing at. I shout out local clubs they will be at, and if there is any admissions deals, such as ladies free till 12 at night.
ML: Is there anything else you would like to say before we end this interview?
MJ: Yeah! Come down and check out the music scene in Minnesota. Talent is everywhere, and people are hungry. There is always live music at night at the bar scene.
