Cole Bettner conducted this interview with Mike Lyons on February 16th, 2018. Mike is an instructor, recording engineer, musician, and placement writer living in Indianapolis. Mike is employed by Azmyth Recording Studios in Indianapolis, IN.
CB: How did you get professionally involved with the Indianapolis music scene?
ML: I’ve always had an interest playing in bands and making music for others to hear. For over 30 years I’ve been playing bass and writing songs in groups within the area. When it comes to the music business, especially in more low-key areas such as Indianapolis, the line between your hobbies and professional involvement with the music industry can be rather thin.
CB: Why did you choose to work with Azmyth Recording Studios as opposed to taking another route in the music industry?
ML: Back in 2010 I attended the Audio & Recording Engineer Apprenticeship Program at Azmyth Recording under the tutelage of Ryan Adkins and Travis Moore. I found that I really enjoyed the environment as well as the staff and saw it as a place where I could spend my time making my living.
CB: What have you been doing since?
ML: I was hired in April of 2012 as an engineer for Azmyth studios. I’ve also spent time working as a mentor and teacher to the people who come and intern here with us.
CB: Are there any recordings I could listen to online that you’ve worked on?
ML: Yes, I have engineering credits on several recordings floating around out there today. Some of those that come to mind currently are Tiara Thomas, Casey Harshbarger, Ace One, Whoa Tiger, Pass the Peas, Thomas Wayne Pruitt, and Salvador Dalai Llama Farm.
CB: Well, you've covered all the questions I had prepared for you today, thank you for your time and cooperation!
ML: Of course! Best of luck to you and your future endeavors whether it be in the music business or anywhere else!
